“The Reels 1979 EP” is an extended play (EP) version Australian post-punk synth-pop outfit The Reels’ debut self-titled album. This shortened version features production from Mark Opitz (Cold Chisel and The Angels). This release granted The Reels notice as they entered the Australian music scene. The reissue project is an effort from the bands guitarist, keyboarder and song programmer Craig Hooper. The series of EPs are designed celebrate and update the cherished story of the bands works.
“The Reels’”peppy, organ-induced wave/pop was seemingly derived from the blueprint of such Elvis Costello slammers as “Radio, Radio” and “Moods for Moderns.” The album boasts heightened rhythmic sensibilities throughout their robust synth-pop. The results are often infectious, with dizzying delights like “Prefab Heart,” “Plastic Pop,” and “Misused, Abused” all vying for the epitome of what this Aussie band have to offer.
