Father John Misty returns with “Chloë and The Next 20th Century”, his fifth album and first new material since the release of “God’s Favorite Customer” in 2018. The album was written and recorded August through December 2020 and features arrangements by Drew Erickson. It sees Tillman and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Wilson resume their longtime collaboration, as well as Dave Cerminara, returning as engineer and mixer.

“Chloë and the Next 20th Century” builds Misty’s previous sounds, the micro-symphonies, the inventive percussion, the swift shift from dusty country-western nostalgia to timeless dirges plunked out on a dive-bar piano. “If this century’s here to stay,” he sings on The Next 20th Century, “I don’t know about you, but I’ll take the love songs/And the great distance that they came.”
